Man Suspected Of DUI Crash Nabbed By Off-Duty Deputy

A 22-year-old Coarsgold man is facing DUI charges after crashing his car into a fence on Highway 41, the Madera County Sheriff's Office said.

An off-duty sheriff's deputy driving southbound on Highway 41 near Road 417 around 10 p.m. on Sunday saw a large plume of dust stirred up by a car driven by Elijah Johnson. The car had crossed the center divider{} and crashed into a fence in front of a nearby smoke shop, the sheriff's office said.

The deputy pulled into the parking lot to offer help, but noticed that Johnson showed signs of being under the influence of alcohol, the sheriff's office said.

The deputy identified himself and told the driver to stay put until unformed officers could arrive, the sheriff's office said.

It took at least two deputies to take Johnson into custody after he became combative, the sheriff's office said.

Johnson was taken to the Madera County Department of Corrections where he was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence and resisting arrest.
