Update: Pedestrian Crossing Highway 99 Hit, Killed By Car

Update: A woman was killed Friday morning while attempting to cross a stretch of Highway 99 in Madera County.

The 43-year-old woman, whose name has been withheld by officials until they notify her next of kin, was struck by a 2001 Saturn that was traveling southbound on Highway 99 near Avenue 24.

The car was traveling at speeds of 60 miles per hour, the California Highway Patrol said.

The driver of the car watched as the woman took of running eastward across the southbound while carrying a gas can, but was unable to react. The front end of the drivers car struck the woman where she was hit by two other cars.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Alcohol is not considered a factor in the collision, CHP said.

The man was hit while he was crossing the highway around 6 a.m. near Avenue 24 in Madera County for reasons still unknown, the California Highway Patrol said.

Southbound traffic is down to one lane.
