Gas-Line Break Closes Kings Canyon Road

A ruptured natural-gas line on Wednesday forced the closure of a busy stretch of road in southeast Fresno.

At around 12:07 p.m., Pacific Gas & Electric officials received reports that a contractor struck an inch-long plastic service line along Kings Canyon Road, just east of Willow Avenue.

The contractor called 811 --the federally mandated number people are asked to call before beginning digging projects -- and was exposing the service line so it could be shut off later today, said PG&E spokesman Denny Boyles.

Boyles said the gas line was damaged while it was exposed, releasing a "very small amount" of gas.

Fresno fire and police personnel shut down the road and controlled traffic while crews worked to repair the leak.{}

The damaged line was fixed around 1:30 p.m., Boyles said. He added that no customers lost service due to the damage.
