Grizzly Bear At Chaffee Zoo Dies; Officials Cite Old Age
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) —
A 38-year-old female grizzly bear at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo had to be put down Friday morning after its health declined, zoo officials said.
The grizzly bear, named Betsy, was euthanized because it began to show "advanced age-related health issues," said zoo veterinarian Louis Wright in a news release.
Betsy had been under close medical care for some time, zoo officials said. The grizzly bear arrived at Chaffee Zoo in April of 1976 from the Los Angeles Zoo. Officials said Betsy was the oldest living female brown bear in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
"One of the saddest aspects of working in a zoo is when these difficult decisions have to be made," said Scott Barton, zoo director. "Betsy lived a good, long life, and we're happy our guests were able to appreciate how amazing bears are through her living here."
