Home Energy Audit: Free If You Live Between Madera & Kern County

If your home is more than a few years old it's probably costing you plenty when it comes to energy.{} But there is a way to give your home an energy tune up and it won't cost you a dime.

Rick Layman is an energy tune-up master for the City of Fresno.{}{}When he and the rest of the city team show up at your door, they are armed with a huge fan.{}{}{}"It makes a vacuum on the house and by doing that shows us where all the leaks are around the doors and the windows and anyplace the air might be coming in."

Ashley Johnston owns{}a home in the Fresno High School District. {} She bought it a year ago but it was built in the 1940's.{} "I saw my bills jump, double in the last year and so{}I really wanted to figure out what was going on what{}I could do to fix that."

The City of Fresno and{}PG&E have been doing free energy tuneup's from Madera to Kern County since 2009.{}{}"You can already see the warm air coming in around the attic access. {} Right here there's just streaks of air which shows the air is just blowing from that side coming around the leakage on the attic access."

Joseph Oldman who is the manager of the project says all of the information{}recorded in{}the thermal imaging camera makes a big difference in the energy audit.{}"We provide the information back to the homeowner in a comprehensive customized homeowner report that's produced using a software that's basically certified by the State of California."

After seeing all the leaks Ashley Johnston is a believer.{}{}"Definitely do some upgrades on the house, make it more efficient whether its for me or the next owner. {} It's the best thing you can do."{} Since 2009, four thousand Central Valley residents have taken advantage of the free service.
