Fire Burns 70 Foot Stretch of Brush Along Highway 99

A 70-foot stretch of Highway 99 was charred when it caught fire Saturday afternoon.

The fire started on the embankment between the Ashlan and Shaw exits around 12:30 p.m.

Fresno firefighters were able to put the flames out quickly, but the firefighting efforts caused the closure of one lane of traffic on the freeway.

Firefighters say dry, "summer-like"{}conditions caused the fire to grow rapidly.

No one was hurt in the fire and there was no damage to nearby business.
