Fashion Guru Meets Fresno Fashionistas

"Life is too short to go around wearing bad jeans," says Fashion Guru Clinton Kelly, moments before his presentation at Macy's in Fresno Saturday afternoon.

A crowd of more than 400 people was on hand to welcome Kelly to the Central Valleyand pick his brain about all things fashion.

Kelly has been with Macy's for the last nine years as a fashion consultant.

"A lot of women think that fashion is something that is scary or something that doesn't apply to them. I'm here to show women there's a big difference between fashion and style," he says.

"Fashion is like the buffet. All the stuff we see in magazines, all the stuff we see in stores and the stuff editors tell you to be wearing. Style is what you put on your plate."

Kelly broke down his presentation by different styles and gave examples using millennial (those in their teens to 20's), curvy, and mature.

After years of helping co-host TLC's "What Not to Wear", Kelly says he's not one to follow trends. Instead, "What you should be wearing is what makes you happy," he says.

"What works for your lifestyle, what works for your body type, what works for your age."

Through the course of the one-hour presentation, he featured models in floral patterns, different dresses, and white.

"Head to toe white, which is tricky for a lot of people," he said.

"The key is adding texture to the mix, instead of just doing flat boring white."

As for jeans, he dished some behind-the-scenes tidbits.

"The average woman I worked with on "What Not to Wear" has to try on an average of 15 pairs of jeans before she finds the perfect pair of jeans for her," he says.

That's why, as stated earlier, life is too short to go around wearing bad jeans.

He also shared a couple of tips on things women can swap out of their closets to elevate their style.

  • trade out those oversized hooded sweatshirts for a jacket in a knit stretch
  • instead of one-size-fits-all t-shirts, go with a blouse.
  • got any bad "mom jeans"? Go with modern jeans in a dark wash.
  • instead of sneakers, try a casual flat... like a boot in the winter, a flat sandal in the summer, or a ballet flat.
