Convicted Detective Killer Gets Life Sentence

A 25-year-old Ivanhoe man will spend the rest of his life in prison for the murder of a Tulare County sheriff's detective.

Jorge Banda on Monday was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole plus 25 years for shooting and killing Detective Kent Haws back in 2007.

Banda pleaded not guilty initially and claimed that he was incompetent, insane and mentally retarded.

But a jury found that he was competent, and a second jury found him guilty in August of first-degree murder of a peace officer, among other charges.

In September, that same jury found Banda was legally sane when he murdered Detective Haws to avoid going to jail for having a gun and an illegal methamphetamine pipe.
