Bakersfield Teen Accused Of Killing Step-Father Over Bad Grades

A 17-year-old is now facing murder charges after accusations that he shot and killed his step-father.

Police say it happened after he was punished for getting bad grades.

A police report shows Patrick Ryan admitted to shooting and killing Derick Lee Mitchell, on June 25th, at their Bakersfield home.

Detectives say Ryan's mother told them she and Lee had just talked with the teen about his grades, when he left to use the bathroom.

Ryan's mother says she later heard a gunshot.

Police say Ryan took the gun out of his step-father's dresser, and shot him.

They also report Ryan was apologizing as they arrived at the house.

Ryan has pled not guilty to 1st-degree murder, and is in juvenile hall.
