Authorities Warn Swimmers To Stay Out Of Kings River

A near drowning on the Kings River has local authorities warning everyone to stay away.

It happened Tuesday afternoon at Winton Park near Pine Flat Dam, east of Fresno.

That's where Fresno County sheriff's deputies say a 14-year-old girl was swept away by the river and when her father went in to help, he was also pulled away.

Deputies say the father went under but the girl was able to pull him out.

The man was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment.

There is no further word on his condition at this time.

Authorities are urging people to stay off of the Kings River.

Sgt. Greg Collins with the Fresno County Sheriff's Department said, "The water is extremely high right now. The water is almost as cold as ice and it's extremely swift. Don't get in the water. It's a lot more powerful than it looks."

Deputies say they've received a number of drowning and near drowning calls in the last few weeks with the hot weather.

They remind anyone heading to lakes, rivers and even pools to make sure you have a life jacket, a dedicated life guard and to keep an especially close eye on kids.
